Using social media to recruit talent - why the best people are already aware of you but you're not aware of them

Here are two figures to put this recruitment issue into perspective:

1- 85% of job hunters have a profile on LinkedIn
2 - 50% of companies actively recruiting staff have a profile on LinkedIn.

That can make it look as if employers are more likely to be aware of candidates than candidates being aware of of potential employers, but the opposite is true.

Understanding why social media matters can help an company, or recruitment agency recognise that a recruiting platform that doesn’t take account of social medial is missing a major trick.

Companies are as obvious by their absence as by their presence. Highly qualified candidates are often conducing ‘passive research’ - following companies they find interesting, setting up alerts for news stories featuring those brands or organisations and so on. Without social media engagement your organisation has nothing for that talent to engage with.

Once again, the gap between what candidates are doing and what they think organisations should do is fascinating:

  • Approaching 50% of candidates see registration with a recruitment consultancy as the best route to moving job and less than 10% actually seek out posts advertised on social media.

  • However, nearly 95% of candidates would be happy for a potential employer to contact them via social media and they maintain their profile on LinkedIn - and to a lesser extent, their Facebook profile - to make this possible.

In other words, over 90% of people believe employers should be actively using social media to reach out to potential recruits.

A recruitment system that doesn’t do social, doesn’t do effective selection

It’s already clear that good candidates expect to use social media to further their careers and any recruitment database should be - as a minimum - able to record the social media profiles of potential candidates so that communication channels can be used effectively. How might that work?

Social media and effective recruitment strategies

A great Twitter campaign run by a major energy company began with a hashtag asking what the energy industry professionals believed their mission to be. Retweets and replies poured into the company’s twitter account and were logged into their online recruitment software. When they ran a formal recruitment campaign a couple of months later, they not only had an established relationship with several key candidates, they had been able to observe how some of the candidates began debates with others, including the company’s own twitter-feed, around energy issues and the future of ‘big energy’. As a result, their applicant tracking system revealed interlinkages between individuals and engagement (or otherwise) with key issues.

This made it easy to find the ideal candidates, to warm up these relationships, and to make approaches based on social media communications giving both parties confidence they were well suited and likely to have a positive long-term relationship. A side benefit was that several of those who were recruited had already begun a dialogue based around the Twitter debate and thus had developed social media relationships that led to rapid and effective team building.

If your recruitment software solution isn’t factoring social media into the mix, you may be:

  • missing out on the best candidates

  • failing to establish good relationships with talent you may require in the future

  • lengthening the recruitment process by neglecting the way that social media can create brand engagement.

Despite having worked for a very large corporate, their system was nowhere near as good as Recruit So Simple (RSS). The other problem with large corporate recruitment systems is that if you want anything improving/changing, there's no-one to talk to. At RSS they take on board all customer comments and work hard to continually develop and improve the system. From a user point of view, the most important things are how quickly can I get to grips with a system, is it intuitive and is it easy to use. The answers are Very, Very and Very. I've used many many recruitment database solutions over the years and always found them limiting. Either by length of contract, cost, flexibility, functionality, usability or accessibility. Since accidentally stumbling across Recruit So Simple I must say for us it has been by far the best move we've ever made. This is for us without question the best cloud based solution we've ever used. And I don't use those words lightly as I've tried most of them. Some come close of course. The usability alone is very straight forward indeed. In fact even though there are various on line support functions to help you master the system, most of it was just common sense. Its as if this solution was designed by Apple. Its that user friendly. I could list lots of advantages to this solution but for me the one that sticks out the most is that its cloud based with simple plug ins to our website and social media platforms enabling us to maximise our reach.

Just got started with Recruit So Simple, let me say I'm very impressed. The support has been fantastic, the only major problem I had was getting my email set up but that was mainly due to me being a complete techno-phobe. It has all the features I need and much better than the collection of spreadsheets and documents I was using before. I looked at a few different comanies before choosing but the ease of use was the deciding factor for me. It's early days but a I'll be a long term customer I hope :)
